Hakia ranks degree programs using data from the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS) and the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). Our methodology weighs program completions, graduation rates, selectivity, and career outcomes to produce composite scores for every program we cover.

Hakia launched in 2004 as one of the first semantic search engines. While Google matched keywords, Hakia's QDEX technology parsed natural language and returned results based on meaning. The New York Times, Wired, and TechCrunch covered the company's work, and the concepts Hakia pioneered (understanding queries rather than matching strings) became foundational to the AI systems we use today.

The original search engine operated until around 2014, when the computational costs of competing with Google's scale became unsustainable. The domain was acquired in 2023 and relaunched with a new mission: applying the same data-first, technology-driven philosophy to higher education. We have no connection to the original Hakia team, but we respect what they built and aim to carry forward the focus on making complex information more accessible.

Technology is where our expertise runs deepest, and it's where we started. The long-term vision is to expand this same rigorous, data-driven coverage across all of higher education.
